Emperor Jewellery Flagship Store at 1881 Heritage to host ‘Because I Am a Girl’ photo exhibition

Did you know girls in impoverished nations are three times more likely to suffer from malnutrition than boys? That over 60 million girls worldwide do not even attend primary school? Or that roughly two million girls between the ages of five and 15 are trafficked, coerced or sold into the sex trade? These are just a few of the realities for girls living inpoverty that Plan International and Emperor Jewellery hope to highlight through the ‘Because I am a Girl’ (BIAAG) photo exhibition, which is held at Emperor’s 1881 Heritage flagship store in Tsimshatsui from 12 – 18 December 2011. Emperor Jewellery, which sponsored the successful BIAAG photo exhibition when it debuted at Times Square in April, is hosting a second run at its flagship store to demonstrate the company’s commitment to Plan’s campaign and to encourage more support from the community. The exhibition features the winning photos from the BIAAG photo competition held earlier this year. The jewellery group is taking its support one step further by holding a BIAAG Pink Carpet Cocktail Reception at its 1881 Heritage flagship store on 12 December 2011, the first night of the exhibition. VIP customers and Plan’s BIAAG ambassadors attended the event. Emperor Jewellery has arranged a silent auction of an 18K White gold necklace with an 18K White gold pearl and diamond pendant to help raise funds in support of the campaign. Emperor Jewellery has also pledged to donate 10% of the proceeds from selected items sold at its 1881 Heritage flagship store during the exhibition period to the BIAAG campaign.

BIAAG woman ambassadors – renowned athlete and artist Ms. Lisa Cheng modeled the auctioned jewellery during the silent auction, and Mrs. Christine Liao, JP, Arts Educator (Ballet) presented a short dance performance by students from her ballet school in the evening. Another BIAAG woman ambassador, renowned culinary artist Ms Tse Ning and Mr Alfred Cheung, renowned movie director and Plan’s ambassador also made their appearance in this event.
Cindy Yeung, Managing Director of Emperor Watch and Jewellery and one of BIAAG’s women ambassadors, said, “Girls are like gemstones. If they can enjoy their well-deserved rights and opportunities, they can become like highly valued jewels in society. We want to remind people this festive season to think of the needy, and we can’t think of a better way to act by donating a portion of our proceeds to ‘Because I am a Girl’ projects that Plan International operates. These initiatives provide more girls with the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

“Because I am a Girl” is a global campaign launched by Plan International to fight genderinequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of the poverty trap. Plan International Hong Kong launched the BIAAG photo competition to enhance public awareness of girls’ rights and garner support among the Hong Kong community. Champions, runners-up and second runners-up in the photo competition were selected from the Primary Group, Lower Secondary Group, Upper Secondary Group and Open Group according to the following criteria: thematic relevance, message, creativity, photographic technique and aesthetic composition. Members of the public were also able to vote online for the “Public’s Favourite” award on Plan’s Facebook Fan Page.
